"Nakon pojavljivanja u preko 120 filmova, Rocky je moj
prvi smash hit," rekao je veteran dasaka, velikog platna i televizijskih
serija, Burgess Meredith, koji je ostvario veliki uspeh na polju glume tokom 60-ih
godina svog života. 

Prepoznat kao
pravo glumačko blago u drugoj polovini 20-tog veka, Meredith se prosto utopio u
lik Mickeya Goldmilla, tokom jednog intervjua 1983-će godine. Rekao je: "Mickey
je jedna od mojih omiljenih uloga. Sreo sam mnogo ljudi njegovog kova u svoje
vreme, ljudi koje je život prebio i bacio na samo dno. Volim ga jer, uprkos
svojoj ličnoj propasti, on želi da svog mladog prijatelja Rocky-a, spasi slične
sudbine."

Burgess
Meredith je rođen Novembra 16-og, 1909, u Cleveland-u, Ohio. Bio je najmlađi od
troje dece doktora Williama Georgea Mereditha, i njegove bivše supruge Ide
Burgess, a takođe i unuk Olivera Clinthusa Burgessa, osnivača prve Clevelandske
Metodističke crkve.

Glumački debi
doživljava 1937 godine, u ekranizovanoj verziji novele „Winterset“. Nakon
zapažene uloge u ovom ostvarenje, dobija uloge u filmovima „Of Mice and Men
(1939)“; „Idiot's Delight (1939)“, sporednu ulogu, rame uz rame sa Clark
Gableom i Normom Shearer; „Tom, Dick and Harry (1941)“, kao partner Ginger
Rogers; „Madame X (1966)“ sa Lanom Turner; i „Stay Away, Joe
(1968)“ sa Elvis Presleyem. Ovo je samo deo impresivne liste filmova u bogatoj
karijeri Burgesa Mereditha. Umetnik, koji je na glumu gledao kao na
konstantnu avanturu, bio je među prvim zvezdama koje su učestvovale u formiranju
televizije. Na malom ekranu, pravio je ogromne poduhvate, preuzimajuću veliki
broj ponuđenih uloga, koje su varirale od naracija u seriji dokumentarnih
filmova „National Geographic“ serijala, preko uloge Pingvina u jednoj od
najgledanijih serija svih vremena, "Batman", pa sve do uloge Benjamina
Franklina, i revolveraša Joe-a.

Njegov
najpoznatiji lik iz ovog perioda, bio je i ostao „Pingvin“. U toku
snimanja serije, Meredith je razvio njegov hrapavi, grubi glas, igrom slučaja:
Dvadesetak godina ranije, ostavio je pušenje, ali je za ovu ulogu bilo
neophodno da non-stop drži u ustima upaljenu cigaretu. Dim bi mu stao u grlu, i
on bi počeo da priča takvim tonom. Da bi prikrio efekat koji je na njega
ostavljao dim, ubacivao je čuveni pingvinov smeh u svakoj od ovih situacija.
"Ustvari, bio je to jako čudan zvuk za jednog pingvina," rekao je
Meredith. "Više sam zvučao kao nekakva patka." 

Privatni
život je živeo u duhu avanture, što je preneo i na platno. Bio je kapetan jedne
vojne jedinice tokom II svetskog rata i, pošto je iskusio teškoće tokom „McCarthy
Ere“, bio je pravi as u borbi za ljudska prava. Burgess je takođe imao farmu
konja, a bio je i predsednik „Delfin“ fondacije, koja se bavi istraživanjem
komunikacione moći delfina, kitova i drugih morskih sisara. Kod kuće je imao
ogroman vinski podrum, a zidovi su mu bili prekriveni njegovim slikarskim
radovima..

Osvrćući se
ka svojoj dugoj i šarolikoj karijeri, Burgess kaže, "Ja sam rođen kao
karakterni glumac, i nisam morao da se odreknem mladosti da bi me ozbiljno
shvatili. I nikada nisam bio vođa. Nikad nisam imao ni devojku. Hvala Bogu, pa
je iza scene bilo potpuno drugačije!" Imao je aktivnu romantičnu karijeru.
Bio je oženjen sa Helen Derby Berrien, Margaret Perry Frueauff, lepoticom Paulette
Goddard (bivšom suprugom Charlija Chaplina) kao i sa Kajom Sundsten.

Među mnogim
nagradama (a lista je prevelika) za njegove glumačke sposobnosti, bile su i
(jedna-do-druge), dve nominacije za „Oskara“, 1975 za „The Day of the Locust“
i 1976 za ulogu Mickeya Goldmilla u filmu Rocky.  Burgess se
setio jedne noći, kada se dobar deo filmske ekipe, krišom uvukao na jednu od
projekcija „Rocky-a“:  "Kada smo gledali grubu verziju filma
na univerzitetu Južne Kalifornije, od vibracija smo drhtali i Silvester i ja.
Reakcija je bila neverovatna."

"Biti
deo „Rocky“ fenomena, za mene je od samog početka bilo nešto što se voli svim
srcem. Rocky III je za mene ipak nešto što se ne da porediti ni sa čim drugim."

U priči o
ulozi Mickeya u filmu „Rocky III“, Sylvester Stallone dodaje da je Mickey
razvio očinski odnos, i ljubav prema Rocky-ju. Jedan bez drugog, oni su ništa.
Njihova srećna budućnost zavisi od toga da li će biti jedan uz drugoga."

"U
prilog svim drugim elementima koje je Mickey uneo u samu priču, scenario je
sadržao tople i dirljive, očinske izlive ljubavi između mentora i učenika ili
prosto – dva najbolja prijatelja, i to su scene koje su najsvetlija tačka
„Rocky“ filmova."

Meredith je igrao u četiri, od ukupno šest nastavaka, s’ tim što
se u petom delu vratio u Rokijevim flashback-ovima. Nakon što je neko vreme istovremeno bolovao od „Melanoma“
raka kože i degenerativnog oblika Alchajmerove bolesti, Burgess Meredith je
umro u svom domu u Malibuu, California, septembra 1997.  Imao je 88 godina. Rocky V je bio njegov poslednji veliki film.

U priči o ulozi Mickeya u filmu „Rocky III“, Sylvester Stallone dodaje da je Mickey razvio očinski odnos, i ljubav prema Rocky-ju. Jedan bez drugog, oni su ništa. Njihova srećna budućnost zavisi od toga da li će biti jedan uz drugoga."
